Cancer Foundation Website Information Architecture-Round 1

Main Navigation

Keep the structure simple and clear. Do not go more than 6 items across on a main navigation. Label sections clearly, and always try to put yourself in the shoes of a user coming to your site for the first time.

Our Work

Tell users about the work you do. Different from an “About Us,” focus on the programs you support. Consider not calling something House Bill 1604 Committee, but rather, “Legislation” or “Advocacy.”

Then list the House Bills on that page.

Support Toolkit

Group items by category or “kind.” The toolkit is really the biggest supporting asset you produce. Call this section, “Support Toolkit,” and consider moving all the current sub pages into an accordion structure that expands and collapses will lessen the amount of navigation you and make it easier for users to find what they need. On Mobile this will translate to a much better experience.

Resource Library

Consider moving all loose documents and videos into one bigger hub. Most of these items are external links. Make sure when you set that link you set it to open in a new window so you do not lose your audience or make them find the cancer foundation site again. This creates a frustrating experience. Categorize sections of the page so it’s clear which links go with which kind of category. Add a page of videos and have one gallery type page where people can stay and view important messages.

Wellness & Prevention

Use this section to focus attention on healthy habits you want members to be aware of. Again, consider moving the Presumptive Illness RCW into the “Our Work” Legislative (or “Advocacy”) page.

Pages related to screenings, tests and new health news information could be very useful here.

About

Consider any items that address who you are or have board resources or staff contained within your “About Us” section.

News & Updates

Suggestions: Eliminate the Calendar function until you really have a more robust calendar set up. Empty calendars look like a ghost town an suggest there are not enough resources to keep the organization going.

Alternative 1: Use your news posting as your event listing. You can tag certain posts as part of a category taxonomy as “Events” and then you should be able to bring in those posts exclusively as an events listing.

Alternative 2: Simply have events listed within your chronological order of news items.

Footer

Use the Footer for “global” items. Meaning, items you want accessible on every page of the website that don’t necessarily require them to be in your main navigation. They are shortcuts to pages or actions you want visitors to use.
